Why You Will Love Clear Aligners for Straightening Teeth
Clear aligners are a popular teeth straightening option for those needing to correct alignment issues. Aligners are clear, plastic trays that are used to push teeth to a better position. These trays are designed to be comfortable when worn and they are the most discreet way to straighten teeth.
Clear aligners can be used to fix dental issues caused by poor teeth alignment including overbites, underbites, crossbites and spaces between teeth.
Reasons to love clear aligners
Metal braces consist of wires and brackets that are cemented to the patient's teeth, which can make treatment uncomfortable and unenjoyable. These components cover a huge fraction of the patient's teeth, giving them a metallic smile.
Braces can be so unsightly, some people who need teeth straightening treatments refuse to get them because they do not want to compromise the way their teeth look. Fortunately for such people, clear aligners can be used to shift the teeth to a new position and they will not have to deal with brackets or wires.
Treatment with clear aligners involves getting multiple aligners at the beginning of the treatment. The patient will wear one aligner for a few weeks until a shift has taken place. Once a shift has taken place, the patient will discard the original aligner and put a new one into place. This process will continue until the entire series of clear aligners have been completed.
The process starts with a consultation with a dentist who examines the patient's mouth to determine the cause of their poor alignment. While clear aligners can now be used to treat a wide range of orthodontic issues, they are still not an effective way to correct alignment problems caused by poor jaw positioning.
Once the patient is approved for clear aligners, the dentist will use digital imaging to create a model of the patient's mouth. Simulations of what the patient's teeth will look like with treatment are run until the dentist is satisfied with the results. This information is used to create the series of trays the patient will wear during their treatment. The data is sent to a dental lab that makes clear aligners and the appliances should be ready within a couple of weeks.
Once the clear aligners are ready, the dentist will teach the patient how to insert, remove and maintain their aligner trays. For treatment to be effective, the patient should wear their aligners for at least 20 hours each day. Wearing aligners irregularly can lead to the patient's teeth reverting to their old position.
The benefits that come with clear aligners include:
- Clear aligners are removable allowing the patient to eat and practice oral hygiene as they have always done
- Clear aligners are less likely to irritate soft tissues in the mouth
- Treatment periods can be shorter with clear aligners
- The clear aligners are almost invisible
