What You Need to Know About Cosmetic Dentistry and Implants

cosmetic dentistry Brooklyn, NY

Dental implants have changed the way cosmetic dentistry addresses missing teeth. These oral prosthetics replace missing teeth roots and they can be fitted with crowns or other restorations. Implants provide better aesthetics than other tooth replacement options like dentures and bridges, which is why dentists that specialize in cosmetic dentistry highly recommend them.

How implants are used in cosmetic dentistry

Implants are cylindrical rods or screws that are surgically inserted in a person's jawbone. They are usually made out of titanium, but other materials like zirconia can also be used. Implants fuse with surrounding bone tissues after their installation and eventually become one with the patient's jawbone. The implant stimulates bone tissues when it experiences bite forces, preventing the bone tissue loss that often takes place after a person loses a tooth.

Determining eligibility for implants

Cosmetic dentistry favors implants as a way to replace missing teeth thanks to the excellent aesthetics they provide. Implants are usually fitted with crowns that blend in with the rest of the patient's teeth, making for a pleasant smile. Unfortunately, not all patients are eligible for these restorations.

Inserting implants into a person's jaw is a surgical procedure, so patients should be healthy enough to recover from it. Diseases like diabetes weaken the immune system, making it harder for people with it to recover from surgical treatments.

Patients also need to have enough jawbone tissues to hold implants in place. People who wait a long time before replacing missing teeth might experience some bone tissue loss. Anyone with jawbone tissues that are not thick enough to hold implants in place might have to get bone grafts so they can proceed with implants. It takes about three months to recover from bone grafts and patients need to be healed before implants are inserted.

Patients should be willing to give up smoking and regular alcohol consumption leading up to the installation of implants. The nicotine in tobacco weakens the immune system, making it harder to heal.

The process

A local anesthetic is typically administered during the insertion of implants so the patient does not feel pain. The dentist might need to make an incision to reach the patient's jawbone tissues. A small hole is made there and the implant is shoved inside. The friction created by the bone tissues around the implant holds it in place as osseointegration takes place. The dentist might cover up the implant with a healing cap before suturing up any incisions made.

Once the implant has fused with surrounding bone tissues, the dentist will attach an abutment to it. This serves as a base for the implant crown that replaces the lost tooth. A custom crown is made for the patient and it is attached to the abutment. This completes the cosmetic dentistry process for replacing missing teeth with dental implants.
