What to Expect From Professional Teeth Whitening

Professional Teeth Whitening Brooklyn, NY

Professional teeth whitening involves removing stubborn teeth stains and whitening the overall shade of the patient’s smile. Many cosmetic dentists and general dentists recommend professional teeth whitening once every year, and understanding what to expect can help you mentally and physically prepare for the procedure.

The professional teeth whitening process

The professional teeth whitening process involves a discussion with the dentist to establish realistic expectations and determine the ideal teeth shade, applying the teeth whitening agent and an aftercare process. The results of in-office teeth whitening can last for more than a year with proper aftercare.

Before the procedure

Patients who are in good oral health (meaning no cavities or weakened enamel) are good candidates for a teeth whitening procedure. Before the whitening procedure, the dentist will determine the current shade of your teeth by using a shade chart. They will then establish realistic goals on how many shades teeth can improve. This allows the patient to see the progress that is made. The patient is also encouraged to ask any questions they have about the in-office teeth whitening process before the procedure begins.

Applying the whitening agent

The procedure itself is completed inside the dentist’s office in a comfortable chair. The dentist may use a cheek retractor to keep the mouth open during treatment. Dentists isolate the surface of teeth from the gums as well. This helps reduce the risk of gum irritation. Next, the whitening agent, which typically contains either carbamide or hydrogen peroxide, is applied to the teeth. The whitening agent is left for approximately twenty minutes before it is washed away. If the desired results are not achieved, the dentist may repeat the procedure again until they get the ideal color shade. In most cases, only one visit is required.

After the procedure

There is little to no discomfort after professional teeth whitening. In some instances, there is minor teeth sensitivity or gum irritation, although all discomfort should be tolerable and go away within twenty-four hours. Any persistent side effects require a trip to the dentist to determine the cause and best course of action. The results should last for approximately a year (or longer in some instances) before another whitening procedure is necessary.

How to keep teeth white long-term

To get the most out of your teeth whitening session, be sure to practice good oral hygiene by brushing, using mouthwash and flossing as directed by the general dentist. Also, reducing the intake of foods and drinks that increase the risk of cavities and teeth stains (such as those that are high in sugar) is encouraged. Lastly, making it into all scheduled dental visits for a check-up and cleaning can keep plaque and tartar buildup to a minimum and prevent teeth stains from developing.
