What Are All-On-4® Dental Implants?

An All-on-4 dental implant is a hybrid of dentures and implants. Dentures are the most affordable way to replace missing teeth, and they are often recommended when a person has lost most of their natural teeth. While dentures are the most affordable solution to missing teeth, they also come with many more disadvantages than some of the other alternatives like implants and bridges.

A dental implant is the closest thing to a natural tooth since this prosthetic replaces the lost tooth as well as its root. There is only one problem: implants are the priciest tooth replacement option, and the cost of a single implant can be more than what it costs to get dentures for both sets of teeth. Completely rebuilding a person's teeth with implants is simply not an option for most budgets.

What makes an All-on-4 dental implant special?

All-on-4 implants are a unique dental restoration that combines two of the most popular teeth replacement option. The implants are used like anchors while a special set of dentures are attached to it. This gives the patient an effective missing teeth solution that preserves bone tissue and allows the patient to go on with life as if they never lost a tooth. All-on-4 implants do not require any specialized cleaning, so the patient does not have to add some tiring maintenance ritual to their daily routine.

What to expect when getting an All-on-4 implant

Anyone who is tired of always having to worry about their dentures falling out or slipping and those who have no desire to ever wear conventional dentures should talk to their dentist about All-on-4 implants. The process usually starts with a consultation with the dentist. The oral professional will go over the patient's medical history and evaluate them to determine if they are a good candidate for All-on-4.

Anesthesia is usually administered during the installation of the implant so the patient does not feel pain. Four implants are inserted into each half of the jawbone, and a special set of dentures will be attached to them.

That ends the installation of the restoration, but the patient still needs to do their part to ensure it is a success. Patients are advised to stick to liquid foods for the first two weeks after getting the treatment. They can then consume semi-solid food for the next two to six months. This is the time it takes for the bone tissue holding the implant in place to fuse with it via a process called osseointegration. Once the implants are fully fused, the patient is free to enjoy all of their favorite foods.

People who opt for All-on-4 implants enjoy certain benefits including:

  • A more comfortable solution to dentures
  • Implants that can last a lifetime with good oral hygiene
  • A cheaper solution to replacing all of their missing teeth with dentures
  • Regaining function of lost teeth
