Healing Tips: All-on-4

All On 4 Brooklyn, NY

Doing All-on-4® treatment has many benefits to your health and smile. You can make this choice if you are missing a few teeth, most of your teeth, or even all of your teeth. The results will give you a full set of teeth and the ability to speak and chew properly. Be aware that this procedure does require a series of surgeries. The recovery can take some time. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to successfully overcome any pain and soreness you feel.

People who get All-on-4

Unfortunately, tooth loss is not an uncommon situation. People can lose teeth due to injuries while playing sports or in accidents, such as collisions or falls. Often, tooth loss is due to poor oral hygiene leading to severe tooth decay or infections. This treatment is good for people who are missing teeth but still have good bone growth. Adults of all ages can benefit from a smile makeover using this method. Patients who have tried but not enjoyed traditional dentures can find success with All-on-4 implants.

Getting proper rest after surgery

There are two surgeries with All-on-4. During the first one, the dentist opens the gums and implants four posts in the upper and lower jaw. The posts fuse to the bone, and the patient must heal. The second surgery requires the dentist to once again make incisions in the gums, this time exposing the tops of the implants. The dentist places abutments here.

The dentist will use a local anesthetic for the surgeries. The person will also experience pain and soreness. After these procedures, the patient should avoid strenuous activity for two or three days to recuperate. Rest and relaxation are vital. In the first 24 hours following the surgeries, the individual should not drive. The patient should also arrange to stay home from school or work.

Taking pain medication

Different people will experience varying levels of pain and discomfort following the All-on-4 procedure. The dentist may prescribe a drug to relieve these sensations. For more moderate pain, an over-the-counter medication, such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen, might be enough to soothe the soreness and irritation. These medications will also help reduce swelling in the gums and jaw.

Using an ice pack

The swelling should go down after three to five days. Using a cold compression pack should speed up this process. The person should leave the pack on for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Doing this several times throughout the day should help with the swelling and minimize any pain.

Being cautious with food

For the first week after getting All-on-4 implants, the patient should stick to soft foods and liquid. As the pain and swelling subside, the person can ease into eating a regular diet. Going forward, people with these implants should try to avoid eating hard, chewy, and sticky foods. These could pull out the artificial teeth or implants.

Make a full recovery, enjoy a new smile

All-on-4 implants are an effective way to replace teeth. The procedure can be challenging, but you can overcome the pain and discomfort. Following these tips will help you feel well. You can get used to the implants and enjoy the benefits.
